Key Stage 1
Welcome to Year 1 and 2
Welcome to Year 1 and 2! We are a mixed class of year 1 and 2 pupils aged from 5-7. Miss Foster is our class teacher and Maxine is our teaching assistant.
We begin our learning each day with handwriting, arithmetic or fine motor activities whilst the children come in before the register is taken. The rest of the morning sessions are spent learning phonics, English and maths. We complete Little Wandle Phonics/Spellings daily, learning our phonemes and graphemes and learning to apply them in our writing. To help develop our phonics skills, we complete paired reading at least 3 times a week, using a variety of methods we have learnt to help us to read accurately and fluently. In English lessons we focus on reading and analysing texts and then move onto creating our own pieces of writing. We also include lots of speaking and listening activities! Our maths lessons follow a Mastery curriculum which includes: place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, measurement, property of shape, position and direction and statistics (for year 2 only). During maths lessons, the children complete a mixture of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving activities.
In the afternoons we spend our time learning about the other curriculum areas including: history, geography, science, RE, computing, PSHE, PE, art, design technology and music. We also take part in outdoor learning in our school garden with Lucille, which produces lots of fruit and vegetables and teaches children all about wildlife and sustainability! The children are very lucky to also take part in activities at nearby Stoven Wood when we can throughout the year.
We make the most of our lovely school grounds and surrounding countryside to do as much outdoor learning as possible. During outdoor learning opportunities we have completed activities such as: building and installing bug hotels in our wildlife area, identifying trees and plants and looking around our local area to create a map of our school and it's surroundings.
